This is only used for digging. (If you look at the documentation, it
indicates what programs use each attribute.)
There's no external program to sort results like this. Internally,
htsearch uses the 'qsort' algorithm. It would probably be better to "sort"
the results using a heap of the same size as the desired number of
results. Then you could quickly browse through the results and pick out
the X highest scores, for example.
I've usually described this process as a "partial sort" before.
