It would seem that either this locale is not defined on your system, or
it's broken. Have a look at the /usr/share/locale directory to see if
an es_ES subdirectory exists, then see if that subdirectory contains the
LC_CTYPE file. If either of these is missing, then the es_ES locale is
not correctly defined, so you'll need to try a different locale that
correctly defines the ctype mappings for ISO-8859-1 (Latin 1) accented
characters.

If you can't find any that work, chances are your locale implementation
is broken on your system. This is a common problem on older libc5-based
linux systems, and seems common on other Unix OSes too. Some users have
been able to successfully install their own locale files, but that'll
only work if the C library supports it.
