The 'cached' effect sounds like your server's standard disk caching...
using the same search terms (even in a different order) accesses roughly
the same portions of the indexed databases, and if the server has recently
accessed that data, it is still cached in RAM.
As for why your searches are so slow after the upgrade... has the size of
your document collection changed recently? Have any other variables
changed (hardware, operating system revision, etc)? Are you making use of
zlib compression for your databases? How large are your current databases
on disk compared to your previous ones?
As you can see, there are many possibilities.
