You probably want to have separate config files for each database.
Then you'd specify the appropriate one in your search form in the
field of that name.

As far as password-verification, you're best off letting the server
handle that. So for example, you could make a symbolic link to the
htsearch program, then tell your server to password-protect that URL,
e.g. <http://www.foo.com/cgi-bin/secure-search.cgi>
