[htdig] timeout question

Ok , So I'm still confused about this timeout thing. Under what
circumstances does it work?

I've just tried a couple of times to index a handful of servers I'm
telnetd into the htdig machine. And if the URL that is being indexed
is having problems, htdig just sits there and then I get timed out on
my telnet connection.

Should I be using timeout as a catchall if a server is down or is
there a better way?
