I don't think the gcc front-end normally deals with C++ code. If configure
is trying it, it must be because it didn't find a c++ or g++ command. You'd
need to install the C++ compiler and libraries, in addition to gcc, to get
it to build.
If you're running Red Hat 4.2, 5.x or 6.0, you can find the appropriate
RPMs in http://www.htdig.org/files/binaries/ . See the announcement at
