[htdig] Can't compile with Digital Unix 4.0b

I cannot get beyond this point compiling v 3.1.2 on Digital Unix 4.0b:

[...]
gcc -o db_recover db_recover.o err.o getlong.o libdb.a
gcc -c -O -I. -I./../include -D_REENTRANT ./../db_stat/db_stat.c
gcc -o db_stat db_stat.o err.o getlong.o libdb.a
Make: Cannot open ../../CONFIG. Stop.
*** Exit 1
Stop.

Any tips/trick/pointer for compiling under DU 4.0b would be most apprecited
(yes, I read the FAQ). Someone out there has to be using htdig on a DU box.
