Hmm...I'm not much of a datbase hack...but in my short
DB experience, I've found MySQL ( http://www.mysql.org/ )
to be tremendously fast, flexible, and well priced (i.e.
FREE). It also supports variable length records, and has
been ported to most any modern platform (and some not so
modern!).

If this were a voting thing...I'd cast one for MySQL.
