George,
When I run make, having installed gnu make in my own directories
../../make-3.77/make

The errors I get are:
several /bin/ld: Can't locate file for: -lht

gdbmreorg.c: In function `rename':
gdbmreorg.c:53: argument `old_name' doesn't match prototype
/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/alphaev5-dec-osf4.0d/2.8.1/include/unistd.h:584
: prototype declaration
gdbmreorg.c:53: argument `new_name' doesn't match prototype
/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/alphaev5-dec-osf4.0d/2.8.1/include/unistd.h:584
: prototype declaration
make[1]: *** [gdbmreorg.o] Error 1

and c++: ../htfuzzy/libfuzzy.a: No such file or directory, which I assume
is a consequence of previous errors.

I get Warnings:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
28 x warning: cast to pointer from integer of different size
5 x warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size
54 x warning: initialization of non-const reference `class String &' from
rvalue `String'
54 x htString.h:33: warning: in passing argument 1 of
`String::String(String &, int)'

The following other warnings:
gdbmopen.c:352: warning: passing arg 1 of `bcopy' from incompatible pointer
type
gdbmopen.c:352: warning: passing arg 2 of `bcopy' from incompatible pointer
type
gdbmreorg.c:51: warning: static declaration for `rename' follows non-static
rxnode.c:125: warning: type mismatch in implicit declaration for built-in

rxposix.c:147: warning: type mismatch in implicit declaration for built-in
function `strlen'
rxposix.c:182: warning: type mismatch in implicit declaration for built-in
function `strcpy'
GDBM_db.cc:186: warning: implicit declaration of function `int

I appreciate any guidance from your experience.
