htdig: Htmerge Sort failed - protected directory

I've been beating my head over this...I get the following error when doing a
merge:

Permission denied: protected directory

I set TMPDIR=/dir/with/lots/of/space
export TMPDIR

This one I SHOULD be able to write to. Executing "sort" by itself gives me
the same error.

Any ideas on what's going on here.
