htdig: htsearch hanging

Last week I posted a question about htsearch processes hanging.

Here are the stats for our site. We are running version 3.0.8b2 under AIX
4.1. The htdig indices look like this:
 36.05MB /usr/local/htdig-3.0.8b2/db/db.docdb
  9.59MB /usr/local/htdig-3.0.8b2/db/db.docs.index
144.90MB /usr/local/htdig-3.0.8b2/db/db.wordlist
237.40MB /usr/local/htdig-3.0.8b2/db/db.words.gdbm

41 servers found (2 with 0 docs), 42250 docs total
(This number will need to increase to quite a bit more, and will eventually
include approximately 60 servers). htdig is run daily as an initial run.

The htsearch process would run for a long time (several minutes), then
finally time out. Server side, the process is still running, and never
dies. This happens with every htsearch, so soon we have a large number of
htsearch processes built up. This problem does not occur all the time, and
I cannot determine what might be happening server side to cause it.

Does anyone have any clues to what is happening here? Do the file sizes
look right? If there is something obvious in the documentation I have
missed, please rub my nose in it! I have also searched the list archives
with no luck.

Thanks very much.
