htdig: htfuzzy core dumping while processing "endings"

I have enabled "endings" in the htdig.conf file.
/usr/sbin/htdig runs successfully
/usr/sbin/htmerge runs successfully
/usr/sbin/htfuzzy -v synonyms runs successfully
BUT /usr/sbin/htfuzzy -v endings
        results in a core dump...

with the -vvv option, htfuzzy says:
<snip>
htfuzzy/endings: goren -->
htfuzzy/endings: gorton -->
Applying regex '^.*e$' to gothicise
gothicise with d --> 'gothicised'
Applying regex '^.*[^aeiou]y$' to gothicise
Applying regex '^.*[^ey]$' to gothicise
Applying regex '^.*[aeiou]y$' to gothicise
Applying regex '^.*e$' to gothicise
gothicise with -eing --> 'gothicising'
Applying regex '^.*[^e]$' to gothicise
Applying regex '^.*e$' to gothicise
gothicise with r --> 'gothiciser'
Applying regex '^.*[^aeiou]y$' to gothicise
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

and "gdb -c core" only says:
Core was generated by `/usr/sbin/htfuzzy -vvv endings'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.
#0 0x400a92ce in ?? ()

any ideas on how to track down this problem?

thanks,
Stewart McCullough
