Let me see if I have this straight. The speed of htdig seems OK to
you, but htsearch seems slow? The only reason I ask, is that this is
exactly the reverse of the trade-offs we've been making in 3.2.

Sorry, no. I can promise that the speed of indexing will get faster,
but there are too many heavily-requested features that go with
on-the-fly indexing (which is itself a requested feature). For
example, people would like to do continual indexing, which means you
can't really stop for an htmerge run...
