Subject: [htdig3-dev] Installation tree layout
Date: Thu Feb 10 2000 - 14:43:31 PST
While fixing problems in the installation process, I realized
that there will be an issue for people wanting to install htdig in
/usr/local. At present headers and libraries are installed in
/usr/local/include and /usr/local/lib. Since the number of headers and
libraries published is quite high, some will find this intrusive.
Publishing headers and libraries is a very good thing, IMHO, since
it allows developpers to build their own programs. But developers do not
like to see their include/lib directory invaded.
I propose the following, which is the only standard way I know to
deal with that kind of problem. Headers might be put in prefix/include/htdig
and libraries in prefix/lib/htdig. Let me know if you like the idea. I think
it's a good time to do this and that we will be in trouble if we do this
later. The best thing is that it only needs a trivial modification of the
Makefile.am. I'll update the documentation accordingly, I swear ;-)
