I don't know if we have test results from IRIX or Digital UNIX, which
would be other major platforms. I would also wonder if it's a compiler
issue. I couldn't come up with a good solution, but I've wondered whether
it's an issue of an inadvertant cross-library dependency.

IMHO, one reason for getting the release out is to make it available to
more platforms. I think most of the active developers are running on some
form of Linux and that makes it difficult to test thoroughly.
