Great, I was just about to diagnose the problem as an endian problem--I'm
testing on LinuxPPC.

I'll send the results of the tests to Marcel in case that will help him
debug it. If we can get this cleaned up, I'm going to roll a pre-release
Tuesday night and maybe try go get it out by the end of the week.

On a somewhat related note, in the 3.1.x series of betas, I ended up
breaking database compatibility a few times to fix bugs. I'm not planning
on making any promises, but should I put in a big disclaimer that until
3.2.0, there may be similar breakage?
