My answer is probably a bit out of focus because I did not
really follow this thread.
The AC_PROG_APACHE macro I wrote for htdig is in aclocal.m4. All
it does is to check version number. The apxs program installed with apache
gives very usefull information on the installed apache version and should
probably be used to enrich this macro.
Note that this macro is used for the tests of htdig and nothing else.
I agree with Geoff when he says that supporting a specific httpd
server implies supporting many of them.
