It definitely needs fixing *somewhere*. At this point it seems
easier to fix the code than fixing the documentation, which
would be the other choice. Fixing the docs would leave the
field open for anticipated uninformed questions about "why it
was disabled for 3.1.0, when the docs say it worked for
3.<earlier>". So I don't think fixing the docs would be TRT
even given the urgency of the release.

I've enabled it for my latest EGCS indexing and will check if
it works sanely (except for the presence of munged words).
 If it does, I think it is best to have it enabled, and guard the
cout:s with "if (debug >= 2)". I'll do that, unless told
otherwise. If not, I'll guess we need to put notes in the docs.
